Question:
I have set a goal to cut my run
time for one mile and a half. I
set a six monnth deadline. Where
can I get the best information for
meeting my goal in the form of a
magazine or web site? Is Runner's
World the highest circulation running
magazine?
Answer:
Here is a sample way to break down
your training:
For the next
2-3 weeks get in some longish (whatever
that means to you) good runs at
a decent level of intensity and
if you're already in relatively
decent shape mix in some 2-4 mile
tempo runs (about 30-45 seconds
per mile slower than your goal pace).
The next 2-3
weeks you should continue doing
your longer tempo runs and mix in
some shorter interval work - Say
4-5 800's at just over race pace,
8-10 by 400 at goal pace, 10-15
200's at slightly under race pace
or some more interesting mixture
of those 800, 400, 200, 200, 400,
800 is a good one. The last couple
of weeks tend
toward the shorter side, 6 200's
at under race pace. You want to
taper but you want the intensity
to stay high.
