Question:
I've just moved to a city and I'm
unfortunately it's all concrete.
So I'm having to ditch my hill running
shoes and get something more suited
to the surface. Does anyone have
any suggestions? I haven't bought
hard surface shoes for a while and
so decided to go to my local running
shop and found that the shoes were
around $126. Is this normal?
Answer:
If you are used to running on trails,
you will want to get you some highly
cushioned shoes at least for the
first 200-300 miles so your body
can adjust. The best shoes are in
that price range ($100-$140), but
you may want to find a specialty
running store in your area, i.e.
not a Foot Locker, Oshmans, or Academy,
and they can help you find the best
shoe for your body type, running
style, and what surface you will
be running on.
I would NOT even attempt any lightweight
trainers or racers (as another person
has suggested) until you get used
to running on concrete.
$126 sounds
a little steep. If it is the Canadian
dollar I might understand. :) What
shoe did they recommend? Was the
local store a Foot Locker or another
of the mall ilk? At least compare
the shoe price, uming they were
not just selling you the most expensive
and possibly inflated to boot, with
say Roadrunners.
The true mom and pop stores are
usually higher in price and deserved
so as they provide a fitting service.
OTOH, if the same shoe is $80 in
the catalog they are way overpriced.
