Question:
My hiking boots have finally given
up the ghost after some 15 years of
wonderful service. I do light day
hikes, overnight hikes, and rarely
carry more than 25 pounds. Also, my
knees and other joints aren't quite
as healthy as they once were.
As I live in South Carolina, light,
cool shoes are a must. It's hot, hot,
hot here. Also wet. So shoes must
be light and dry quickly.
I use Sauconys for running and feel
quite comfortable with them, but I
question the wisdom of using trail
running shoes for hiking boots, mostly
for sole stiffness and ankle support.
Any suggestions for comfortable, light-duty
hiking boots?
Answer:
I have a pair of Asics Gel Trabucco
III trail running shoes which apparently
do not breath very well. Speaking
from experience I can say that they
are great performers for a 5K or 10K
in the park, but not for walking hours
on end. YMMV with other brands - especially
with trail running shoes made by hiking
boot companies.
